Nine die in India hotel fire
About nine people, including a child and five Bangladeshi nationals, have died in a fire at a hotel in central Kolkata, India, on Wednesday.
A senior police official told Reuters that the fire started about 2:50 a.m. on Wednesday, and could have been triggered by an electrical short circuit on the second floor of the hotel building.
The hotel is said to be in a congested area in central Kolkata, an area known for affordable accommodations and restaurants.
The blaze was brought under control within an hour, as authorities were able to rescue 80 people at the scene.
Authorities said a child and five Bangladeshi nationals from the same family were killed in the fire, with six more individuals receiving hospital treatment.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, said a five-member Special Investigation Team would be formed to determine the cause of the incident.
