NLC, TUC suspend nationwide strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have suspended the ongoing strike in response to the police assault on NLC president Joe Ajaero in Imo State.
The joint National Executive Council (NEC) decided to halt the industrial action following a meeting with a federal government delegation on Wednesday to protest against the assault on Mr Ajaero.
TUC president Festus Osifo and NLC general secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja met with the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President, Nuhu Ribadu, the minister of labour and employment, Simon Lalong, and others to discuss the issue on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Mr Ribadu urged the organised labour to call off the two-day-old strike.
In a statement issued in Abuja by Zakari Mijinyawa, head of strategic communication in the Office of the NSA, Mr Ribadu also condemned the attack on NLC President Mr Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1.
The strike, which began on Tuesday, disrupted commercial activities across cities in the country, with schools closed as teachers downed tools.
