Mr Odeh urged residents and members of the public to keep away from the affected area

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) says it has activated emergency response measures following an explosion on its gas pipeline in Eleme, Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, at Aleto community in the Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers, involving a pipeline belonging to the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Ltd. (NGIC), an NNPC subsidiary.

The NNPC Ltd., in a statement on Friday by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, expressed concern over reported injuries and damage to homes and businesses.

Mr Odeh said NGIC had activated its emergency response procedures and isolated the affected pipeline segment to limit further impact.

He added that it was working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), security agencies and other stakeholders to coordinate the response and assess the impact on people, property and the environment.

According to the statement, NNPC is also engaging community leaders to identify immediate needs and coordinate appropriate support for those affected.

“The cause of the incident and the full extent of its impact are currently being assessed. NNPC Ltd. remains committed to the safe and reliable operation of its assets.

“Relevant operational information, including previous reports and actions taken, will be reviewed to support a clear understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

He urged residents and members of the public to keep away from the affected area and comply with safety instructions from emergency responders and relevant authorities.

Mr Odeh reiterated NNPC’s commitment to the safety of host communities, environmental protection and the safe operation of its facilities, promising further updates as verified information became available.(NAN)
