Non-academic staff unions across Ondo State-owned universities have declared a total and indefinite strike over the federal government’s failure to implement an agreement with university-based unions.

The decision was conveyed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Akure by the secretary of the Joint Action Committee of Ondo State-owned Tertiary Institutions (JAC-ODSTI), Kunle Akinwonmi, and its chairman, Tayo Ogungbeni.

The directive affected members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The affected institutions include Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA); Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa; and the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo.

According to the unions, the strike takes effect at midnight on Wednesday, September 2, after the state government’s 14-day ultimatum expires.

They noted that the industrial action was decided during an emergency meeting of the JAC leadership on Tuesday, following the government’s failure to fulfil its promises regarding the implementation of the agreement.

The unions recalled that the state government had earlier announced a 60 per cent increment in subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions and approved the implementation of the FGN/Unions agreement starting from August 2026.

The JAC, however, alleged that the state government released the old subvention figure for August without reflecting the promised 60 per cent increment.

The unions maintained that the strike would persist until the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA) and all associated allowances are fully paid with effect from January 2026.
