A nonagenarian, Ed Dwight, has broken the record of being the first to go to space.

Mr Dwight broke the record on Sunday after the Blue Origin spacecraft took a six-person crew to the edge of space before parachuting them back to earth.

“I thought I would not need this in my life but now I need it (laughs),” Mr Dwight told the BBC.

Mr Dwight stated how he approached his mother, who encouraged her with ‘love’ to embark on the trip to space.

He added, “She (her mother) served me with love and encouraged me.’’

In 1961, he was chosen as the “first black astronaut candidate” in the United States by erstwhile president, John F. Kennedy.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration did not select him for a mission and Mr Dwight didn’t get a chance to go to space until now.

The 90-year-old waited for more than 60 years to fulfil his ambition to go to space after decades of training.
