Northern group donates N50 million to Borno flood victims

The League of Northern Democrats have donated N50 million to the Borno State Government to support victims of the recent devastating flooding in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
The donation was announced during a visit by a delegation of northern politicians and statesmen to the Borno Government House on Wednesday.
Speaking on behalf of the League, a former Kano State governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, extended its heartfelt sympathy to the people of the state over the tragedy.
He commended the state government for the swift and decisive actions taken to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
Mr Shekarau said that the group’s contribution was collected from individual donations, ranging from N10, 000 to N2 million from members across the northern region.
He reiterated that the non-partisan group was committed to addressing key political and developmental challenges in the North, adding that their support transcended party affiliations.
‘He said, “We are here to express our solidarity with the government and people of Borno in this difficult time. This N50 million contribution is our way of supporting the tireless efforts of the state government to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the floods.’’
He lauded the role of traditional leaders, particularly the Shehu of Borno, for providing moral and spiritual support during the crisis.
Responding, the state governor, Babagana Zulum, expressed gratitude for the donation, acknowledging the group`s commitment to the well-being of the people of Borno.
He commended them for their solidarity during the crisis, stating that the gesture was not just about the amount donated but the spirit of compassion behind it.
Mr Zulum assured the delegation that the funds would be used effectively to provide a much-needed relief to those impacted by the disaster.
The governor acknowledged the significant impact of the floods, which resulted in the loss of lives and livelihoods for many residents.
He highlighted the continued efforts of his administration in delivering the dividends of democracy, and praised the collective efforts of Nigerians in supporting the state.
The governor expressed optimism about the future of the state, sharing positive developments in agriculture and security in the region.
