NOUN declares three-day mourning for slain bursar
The National Open University of Nigeria has declared a three-day mourning period for its slain bursar, Nasiru Marafa.
Mr Marafa was reportedly shot by unknown gunmen while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State, on Sunday.
In a statement on Tuesday, the university said, “The mourning period commenced on Monday, September 7 and would end on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
It explained that the interfaith memorial service would follow the mourning period on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the university headquarters in Abuja by 2:00 p.m.
“The mourning period will culminate in an interfaith memorial service, at which Christian and Muslim prayers will be offered in honour of our departed bursar,” it added.
The university urged members of staff to converge on the convocation arena to participate in the service to “collectively mourn the loss, honour the memory and pay tribute to the life and service of Malam Nasiru Marafa.”
It further appealed to the university community to observe the mourning period with due solemnity and to gather together on Wednesday in a spirit of unity, faith and fellowship in honour of the departed soul.
