Former Ikorodu United forward Godwin Odibo scored his first Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) goal for Remo Stars as the Sky Blue Stars defeated Shooting Stars 2-0 in the South-West derby on Wednesday to go top of Group A.

It was a lukewarm first half at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, with both teams lurking around each other’s half but were lacking the cutting edge to put the ball past the goalkeepers.

However, Shooting Stars found the back of the net through Malomo Taofeek’s header but were ruled out by the referee after a foul by Akpan Joshua on Remo Stars’ player to deny him from defending a freekick.

Remo Stars looked rejuvenated in the second half, playing the opening minutes of the half in the Oluyole Warriors’ territory until the half hour mark when an encounter play by Andy Okpe resulted in an own goal by Alex Aghahowa as the host grabbed the lead.

In the final minutes of the game, the star of the match, Odibo collected the ball from a counterattack, drove it from the left side of the pitch and placed it past goalkeeper Bamidele Adeniyi to score his first top flight goal and also seal the victory for the Sky Blue Stars.

With the victory, Remo Stars jumped to top of Group A, with three wins from three matches, while Shooting Stars slipped to the bottom of the group with only two points out of possible nine.

Today’s game completed the round of fixtures for the matchday three of the abridged NPFL season.

In the other Matchday 3 fixtures that were decided in the past few days, Akwa United demolished struggling Nasarawa United 3-0 at home to record their first win of the season, while Bendel Insurance pip Kwara United 1-0 to continue their season’s perfect run.

Champions Rivers United defeated Niger Tornadoes 2-1 in a controversial match to go top of Group B with seven points. In the game, Tornadoes had their clean late equaliser denied by referee Faro Abdulrahman, who have been subsequently suspended as a result of the incident.

Meanwhile, Plateau United defeated eight-time champions Enyimba 2-1 to record their first win of the season, while Sunshine Stars played their third straight draw of the season in a one-all draw fixture against Enugu Rangers.
