Nigeria Professional Football League side Kwara United has condemned the violence that followed the rescheduled league match against Rivers United after home crowds attacked the visiting contingent and match officials on Wednesday.

However, that was not enough to fall under the sledge of the NPFL.

Mayhem broke out after the final whistle. Dozens of Kwara United fans stormed the stadium to block Rivers United players, club officials, and match officials from leaving the pitch.

The fans attacked them, delaying their exit for more than 40 minutes.

In a statement on Thursday, the club said, “It is with profound regret and deep concern that Kwara United Football Club addresses the unfortunate incidents of violence that occurred following our rescheduled Gameweek 22 match against Rivers United FC, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Ilorin today, February 18, 2026.

“The club unequivocally condemns the actions of the irrational elements who engaged in such unacceptable behaviour, particularly the attack on Chief Okey Kpalukwu, the respected chairman of chairmen in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).”

The club added, “We deeply regret the distress caused to all parties involved and extend our sincere and unreserved apologies to Chief Okey Kpalukwu personally, the Rivers United delegation, match officials, security personnel, and innocent spectators affected by these deplorable events.”

The club promised to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.

Meanwhile, the NPFL has imposed on the club a N9 million fine, three points and three goals deduction, and a banishment to MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta for their remaining home matches.

The club has also been directed to identify the supporters who assaulted match officials and Rivers United officials for arrest and prosecution, with evidence of compliance submitted to NPFL.

Kwara United are eligible to appeal the verdict within 48 hours.
