The Nigerian Society of Engineers has called on President Bola Tinubu’s government to appoint persons with technical expertise and professional qualifications for River Basin Development Authorities.

NSE’s president, Margaret Oguntola, stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Thursday.

The federal government recently reconstituted the executive management of the nation’s 12 RBDAs.

Ms Oguntola explained that appointing persons with requisite technical expertise and professional qualifications to lead RBDAs was necessary to navigate the industry’s complex engineering challenges.

“River Basin Development Authorities play a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient administration and equitable distribution of Nigeria’s water resources. This is essential for agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability and economic growth.

“It is vital that these Authorities are overseen by individuals who possess both the technical expertise and professional qualifications required to navigate the complex engineering challenges of the industry,” she said.

Ms Oguntola said appointing persons with the requisite engineering qualifications would boost the integrity of these institutions and the ability to fulfil their mandates effectively.

She said such appointments would uphold the standard of professionalism in governance, particularly in sectors that directly impact the livelihood of millions of Nigerians.

The NSE leader also advocated for transparency and consultations in the appointment process.

Such professionals, she said, should occupy the critical positions of executive director, engineering, and executive director, planning and design in the RBDA management/boards.

“We further call on civil society and concerned citizens to join us in voicing this critical issue. We encourage stakeholders in the engineering, environment and development sectors to raise awareness.

“They should share insights and collaborate on strategies that promote the appointment of qualified individuals in leadership positions across Nigeria’s public sector as established in the relevant laws,” she added.
