Residents of Nsukka town in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State witnessed their first rainfall in 2022 on January 18.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nsukka on Tuesday, some of the residents discussed the implications for their health, the environment as well as farming.

Monica Ibe, a civil servant said the rainfall was a great relief for the environment. “This first rain is a great relief; it will help to reduce the hot weather.”

Kenneth Idoko, a non teaching staff member at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) said the rain would reduce the high temperature in the area.

“Before the rainfall, sleeping at night was a problem because of heat, even with windows and doors open… The rain that lasted over 45 minutes will cool the environment as well as reduce the dust level.”

Joseph Ezema, a farmer, said he has “cleared the bush where I will plant my crops; now first rainfall happened today (Jan. 18).

“If before the end of January the second rain comes, by first week of February I will enter my farm and start planting my crops,” he added.
