The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) has appealed to employers of labour to give full employment to corps members, who proved their mettle, after the service year.

Eddy Megwa, Lagos Coordinator of the scheme, made the appeal when he paid a courtesy visit to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Mr. Megwa spoke against the backdrop of corps members being rejected when deployed for primary assignments.

According to him, giving the corps members the needed acceptability will create an opening for such fresh graduates to gather the experience needed after they might have completed the one-year compulsory service to the nation.

“It gives us great concern and poses a major challenge that some corps members are being rejected when posted to a place of primary assignment.

“That is not good enough.

“Both governments and private organisations are expected to play significant roles in the activities of the corps members basically by accepting them and creating an enabling environment for them to work as fresh graduates.

“The one year they are allowed to put in will afford them an opportunity to gather the needed experience to improve in their area of discipline,’’ Mr. Megwa told NAN.

On completion of the service year, he said, organisations should be able to absorb them by way of employing those that performed exceptionally well during their primary assignments.

“We will be glad to hear a situation whereby a high percentage of corps members deployed for primary assignments in establishments are retained based on credible performance during their service.’’

Recognising the fact there was an economic meltdown, the coordinator urged organisations to live up to expectations by giving stipends to cushion the effects of the accompanying hardship.

This, he said, is more desirous, especially in situations where transportation and accommodation were not provided for corps members.

Giving an update on 32 corps members of the 2020 Batch ‘A’, who were found wanting during their service year and were directed to repeat the exercise, Megwa disclosed that they had been served letters.

“They are already starting the task over again as part of a punitive measure,’’ he said, adding that they were posted outside Lagos.

“For those corps members that did well, they got commendation letters.

“But the 32 others who absconded from the camp, have been served their punishment and they have their letters to repeat their service year outside Lagos,’’ he added.

Mr. Megwa, however, solicited for more funds and inspection facilities to empower officials to move around the state to monitor corps members in their places of primary assignment.
