NYSC DG shuts down youth service, insists corps members should stay away from nationwide protest

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) director-general, Brig.-Gen. Yushau Ahmed has suspended all service activities and warned all corps members against participating in the upcoming nationwide protest starting on Thursday.
In a memo shared to local government inspectors and zonal inspectors, Mr Ahmed, through the NYSC spokesperson A.A. Jikamshi, directed all corps members to suspend wearing their uniforms until further notice.
Other mandatory activities, such as biometric clearance and community development service, have also been put on hold amid escalating tension about the planned protest scheduled for 10 days.
“Biometric clearance and CDS activities are suspended with immediate effect,” the memo stated. “Date for the resumption of these activities will be communicated to you in due course.”
Mr Ahmed insisted that “no corps member should participate in any protest” and directed zonal inspectors to ensure compliance with the orders at their designated stations.
Nigerians are bracing to demonstrate against the Bola Tinubu administration over a declining economy and skyrocketing inflation that exacerbated a cost of living crisis as traders bewail low patronage due to the continuous increase of staple food.
