OAU mourns 400-level medical student who died during clinical examination

According to Mr Olarewaju, the student passed away despite immediate remedial efforts.

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has announced the passing of Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, a 400-level student in the College of Health Sciences. 

Abiodun Olarewaju, the school’s spokesman, said in a statement on Thursday that the unfortunate incident occurred during a clinical viva examination.

According to Mr Olarewaju, the student complained of chest pain during the course of his examination and subsequently passed away despite immediate remedial efforts by lecturers and students.

“The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University deeply regrets to announce the sudden passing of one of its medical students, Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, a Part IV student in the College of Health Sciences,” Mr Olarewaju said.

The university noted that the student died despite medical efforts undertaken to revive him.

“This tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the University community,” the spokesman said.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff and students, extended heartfelt condolences to the parents, siblings and the entire family of the deceased.

Mr Bamire also condoled with the deceased’s friends, colleagues and all members of the institution’s College of Health Sciences, describing the loss as “painful and irreparable.”

The management noted that it is engaging with relevant authorities and the affected family to provide necessary support and to understand the circumstances surrounding the loss.

“May the soul of the departed rest in perfect peace,” Mr Olarewaju stated.
