The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has said the institution is still on a three-week mid-semester break.

It urged students and the public to disregard any information to the contrary.

The institution’s spokesman, Abiodun Olanrewaju, in a statement on Friday, described a purported resumption notice as fake, malicious and an attempt by mischief- makers to mislead the public, create tension and tarnish the institution’s image.

Mr Olanrewaju stated that the letter was neither issued nor signed by the institution’s registrar as misrepresented or any authorised organ of the university.

“The attention of the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been drawn to the circulation of a fake letter purportedly issued and signed by the Registrar of the University in respect of the ongoing three-week mid-semester break approved by the University Senate.

“The said letter did not emanate from the Office of the Registrar or any authorised organ of the University. The signature appended thereto is fake, forged and criminally fabricated,” it stated.

The spokesman called on stakeholders, including students, parents, guardians, alumni and staff of the institution to dismiss the letter, reiterating that it did not emanate from the university’s authorities.

Mr Olanrewaju noted that official information from the university’s management would be duly communicated through recognised and verified communication channels.

He urged students and the general public to be wary of falsehood and misinformation.

Earlier on Tuesday, April 28, the OAU management declared a three-week mid-semester break, following students’ protest over the newly introduced transportation system.

The university Senate said it approved the mid-semester break to restore order, ensure safety and create an enabling environment for meaningful dialogue.

The students rejected the newly introduced transportation policy in the institution, demanding sufficient vehicles for public use in the university and opposed a renovation plan by the management, requiring the eviction of some students residing in Blocks 7 and 8 of the institution’s Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence.
