Ogun government urges elders to avoid self-medication

The Ogun government on Monday appealed to elders to desist from self-medication.
“Self-medication is dangerous to health; elderly persons are advised to avoid it,” the head of service, Kehinde Onasanya, said in a statement.
Mr Onasanya made the appeal in Abeokuta at the celebration of the 2025 World Physiotherapy Day.
The event was organised by the Physiotherapy and Medical Rehabilitation Department of the Ogun State Hospitals Management Board.
Speaking on the theme ‘Healthy Ageing and Prevention of Falls in the Elderly’, Mr Onasanya said that physiotherapy and physical activities were crucial to the well-being of the elderly.
Mr Onasanya, who was represented by the permanent secretary of the Hospitals Management Board, Olayinka Elemide, said that senior citizens should always try to desist from things that could increase their worries or bring on depression.
The permanent secretary of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, Abdul Suraj, appreciated the organisers for sensitising the elderly and identifying with them.
He stated that the event would benefit the elderly and make their lives significantly easier.
Also speaking was Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Saka Matemilola, who led other monarchs to the event, commending the organisers for prioritising the welfare of the elderly.
Mr Matemilola encouraged the elderly to constantly seek medical attention and avoid self-medication.
Earlier in her welcome address, Moji Abeokuta, director of physiotherapy and medical rehabilitation, Ogun State Hospitals Management Board, had said the event was organised to offer medical counsel to the elderly.
