The death of a National Youth Service Corps member, Victoria Ariyo, following a botched abortion after an alleged affair with her Local Government Inspector (LGI) identified as Olalekan Abass has continued to stir emotions.

Mr Abass is the LGI in charge of Abeokuta South Local Government Area where Ms Ariyo, said to be in her 20s, was deployed.

The Peoples Gazette gathered that Ms Ariyo’s alleged sexual relationship with Mr Abass resulted in a pregnancy.

The corps member, said to have undergone an abortion, developed complications from the procedure which ultimately led to her death on Tuesday.

A corps member serving in the LG identified only as Faith said Ms Ariyo’s remains had been buried at the Kobape Cemetery on Kobape-Sagamu Road, Abeokuta.

She noted that the deceased’s friends and fellow corps members were inconsolable during the burial.

Contacted, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, told The Gazette that the the police had commenced an investigation into the case.

“I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the state criminal investigation department,” Mr Babaseyi said.

He added that the police would provide an update in due course but refused to comment on whether the suspect was in police custody.

However, a highly-placed police source who spoke on condition of anonymity stated that Mr Ariyo was currently detained at the Police Command Headquarters Eleweran, Ogun State, for arraignment on Monday.

Meanwhile, efforts by the Gazette to get the reaction of the Ogun State NYSC spokesperson, Emmanuel Igba, to speak on the issue were abortive.

His mobile was switched off and a text message sent had yet to be replied as of the time this story was filed. The state NYSC has yet issued an official statement on the incident.

Ms Ariyo’s death comes weeks after another female corps member, Mary Adeleye, died in a questionable circumstance in the state.

Ms Adeleye reportedly died in her room.
