Ogun police arrest two men over illegal possession of firearms

The Ogun State police command has arrested two men, Rasheed Omoniyi, 48, and Adeola Mathew, 47, in the Ifo area over alleged possession of firearms and other illegal weapons.
In a statement on Sunday, Oluseyi Babaseyi, spokesperson for the command, said the suspects were arrested on May 9, 2026, after credible intelligence led operatives to a suspected criminal hideout.
“The arrest was effected on Friday, 9th May 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., when detectives attached to Ifo division acted on credible intelligence and stormed a criminal hideout along Ibogun Road, NITEL area, Ifo,” he said.
Mr Babaseyi said Mr Mathew was apprehended at the scene during the operation, adding that a search of the hideout led to the recovery of a locally made pistol concealed within the premises.
He added that preliminary investigations revealed that the recovered firearm was allegedly handed to the suspect by Mr Omoniyi, who was subsequently tracked down and arrested by operatives.
“The recovered locally made pistol has been secured as an exhibit, while investigation is ongoing to ascertain the source of the firearm and the suspects’ possible involvement in other criminal activities,” Mr Babaseyi said.
He added that the case would soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and prosecution.
