The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that TikToker Abigail Nsuka, otherwise called Mirabel, who alleged she was raped in her apartment, is currently under investigation.

The state police public relations officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, told Peoples Gazette on Friday that Mirabel is in custody after she admitted that her previous allegation was false.

“We have her. Investigations will explain the next line of action,” he said.

Earlier, in a statement reposted on his official X page, Mr Babaseyi said, “If she is telling the truth based on her account and experience, the perpetrator will be arrested and appropriately charged in court. On the other hand, if the claims are found to be false, the law provides for consequences, and anyone giving false information can be held culpable.”

The statement followed a viral incident in which the TikToker alleged she was sexually assaulted in her apartment.

The claim initially drew widespread support on social media and prompted intervention by government agencies, including the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA).

Mirabel and two of her friends went live on TikTok, sharing what they described as her account number and inviting viewers to support her financially. Although they maintained they were “not begging for money,” they told viewers they could assist if they wished.

A neighbour later publicly disputed the alleged assault, and Mirabel eventually admitted in conversations with Nigerian social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, that her claim was false and she was under panic attacks.

Earlier, the Lagos State DSVA confirmed that it had reached out to Ms Nnsuka and her friends to provide support and ensure her well-being.

The matter was then referred to the Ogun State police for appropriate handling, where authorities ensured she received medical attention.

The police also issued a public advisory on Friday, warning that giving false information to authorities or circulating false reports on social media is a criminal offence under Nigerian law.

The advisory cited the Nigerian Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, noting that offenders may face imprisonment, fines, or both.

The command emphasised that spreading false information wastes government resources, obstructs investigations, and creates unnecessary panic, urging the public to verify facts before sharing online.
