A 43-year-old woman, Iyayi Florence, appeared before the Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun on Tuesday over an alleged fraud of N2.4 million.

Ms Florence faces two counts of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, E.O. Adaraloye, told the court that the offences were allegedly committed at Sango-Ota Market.

Mr Adaraloye alleged that the defendant obtained N2.4 million from the complainant, Ismail Afolabi, under the pretext of supplying 35 kegs of 25-litre vegetable oil.

He also alleged that the defendant converted the money for her personal use rather than fulfilling the supply agreement.

According to the prosecutor, the alleged offences contravene sections 390 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

Magistrate O.O. Fadairo granted the defendant N250,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

The magistrate ruled that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, be gainfully employed, and provide evidence of tax payment to the Ogun government.

He adjourned the case until July 15 for further hearing.
