A former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, on Thursday, announced his defection to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mr Omo-Agege, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Sunny Areh, also declared his intention to run for the Delta Central senatorial seat under the NDC.

The announcement comes six days after his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he lost the party’s primary election to Senator Efe Dafinone. 

“Today, I formally announce my decision to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC). On this platform, I will contest for the Delta Central senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections,” he said.

According to him, he made the decision after weeks of reflection, consultations, and conversations with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders, adding that the party is the path to achieving the interests of Delta Central and Nigeria.

The former governorship candidate of the APC in the 2023 election lamented past governors’ failure to translate the state’s oil wealth into development, as evidenced by poor roads, underfunded healthcare facilities, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure.

“Right now, too much of Delta’s wealth sits in the CBN accounts, while our people suffer from bad roads, collapsed hospitals, and abandoned communities,” he said.

Mr Omo-Agege thanked party leaders, including a former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson; the party’s national chairman, Moses Cleopas; a former Anambra State governor and presidential aspirant, Peter Obi; and a former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, for allowing him into the party.
