The Amotekun Corps in Ondo State has threatened to shut down any private and public institutions that fail to install the Closed Circuit Camera Television (CCTV) at their premises and facility. 

Commandant of the Corps in the State, Adetunji Adeleye, who disclosed this in Akure, said the installation of the CCTV cameras was aimed at assisting security agencies in tracking criminal elements.

“Penalties for non-compliance, failure of any of the concerned operators/ owners to comply with this directive will attract the following sanctions. 

“The premises shall be closed down indefinitely and the owners shall be prosecuted,” Mr Adeleye said on Wednesday via a statement.

The decision reinforce the Executive Order signed by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu instructing that CCTV cameras be installed in all public facilities, following the increasing spate of insecurity in the state and the country at large. 

Mr Adeleye further, however, issued an August 1, 2022 ultimatum to all the public institutions to enforce the cameras in their establishments adding that the Corps would commence full enforcement after the deadline. 

He added that the step was in line with global best practices in intelligence operations to provide real-time clips on criminal activities.

“The Executive Order made it mandatory for all public places financial Institutions, restaurants, hotels and other lodging facilities, beer parlour/ bars, night clubs, educational institutions, and religious worship centres in all the 18 Local Government Areas of the State to have functional video surveillance / closed Circuit Camera Television ( CCTV ) equipment installed in strategic locations within their premises.”

According to him, the owners and proprietors of the establishments are to ensure the safety of all video recordings as any attempt to damage or manipulate such shall be liable to prosecution.

The Executive Order signed by Mr Akeredolu came barely a few weeks that terrorists attacked and killed 40 worshippers at the St Francis Catholic Church in Owo.
