The Ondo State government has commended the state chapter of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) for emerging champions at the last edition of a soccer tournament in Kaduna.

The state commissioner for youth and sports development, Omoyofunmi Henry, gave the commendation on Friday in Akure while receiving the trophy won by the state’s female team.

The event was held in May as part of the larger 21st Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) U-14 Boys and Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) U-17 Girls Soccer Tournament.

The tournament was organised by YSFON and sponsored by the Nigerian Navy.

The cup was presented by the Ondo State YSFON chairman, Abayomi Ogunlade.

The commissioner, while receiving the trophy, applauded the efforts of YSFON in promoting grassroots sports in the state.

“I assure you of the state government’s continued support; your victory has further positioned the state as a top contender in grassroots sports development in Nigeria,” he said.

The commissioner pledged the government’s support for the upcoming 40th edition of the Ramat Cup, scheduled to take place from August 8 to 16 in Nasarawa State, where Ondo State would be represented by the male team.

Earlier, the state chairman of YSFON, Abayomi Ogunlade, congratulated the commissioner on his appointment and used the occasion to highlight some of the challenges facing sports development in the state.

Mr Ogunlade said funding and infrastructure were major challenges in the state.

He outlined the team’s recent achievements, including winning the 2024 edition of the President Unity Cup and excelling in the U-17 female and U-14 male categories of the NOWA Cup.

Mr Ogunlade, while speaking on the upcoming Ramat Cup, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, stating, “The players are fully prepared to make the state proud once again.”

Temitayo Onilude, the team’s coach, said the squad had been engaged in several friendly matches to stay in top form ahead of the tournament.

The Ondo State male YSFON team is expected to depart for Lafia, Nasarawa State, on August 6 for the Ramat Cup competition.
