Ondo varsity to probe allegations against governing council chairman

The Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Ondo State, said a council meeting will be constituted to resolve the dispute between its governing council and the Joint Action Congress (JAC).
This is contained in a statement on Thursday in Okitipupa by Peter Okunniga, the OAUSTECH’s registrar and secretary to the governing council, Peter Okunniga.
A seven-day protest was embarked on by the JAC on March 10 over the alleged illegal tenureship of the Governing Council Chairman, Akinbo Adesomoju.
The JAC accused Mr Adesomoju of abuse of office and non-promotion of two staff members to the position of directors after passing the examination.
Mr Okunniga stated that the two issues – the non-approval of two JAC members to the rank of directors by the council and the tenureship of Mr Adesomoju – would be resolved at the council meeting.
“The management of OAUSTECH acknowledges the recent news coverage regarding the institution’s JAC seven-day protest. The two issues involved are the non-approval of two members of JAC to the rank of directors by the Governing Council and the issue of tenureship of the pro-chancellor.
“On the first issue, JAC wrote a letter of appeal to the council with a seven-day ultimatum, and the council directed JAC to route the letter of appeal through the vice-chancellor, which JAC has not complied with.
“On the second issue, the management observes that only the visitor to the university has the power to determine the tenure of the pro-vhancellor. Council is meeting very soon to resolve these issues,” Mr Okunniga said.
JAC members are the Senior Staff Union of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
