At least one person was killed and several others injured as assailants opened fire on crowds during Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade in the city of Kansas on Wednesday.

According to the New York Times, the incident occurred near Kansas City’s Union Station on Wednesday as pandemonium erupted among the crowd after sounds of gunfire filled the area out of nowhere.

One person was confirmed dead as of the time of filing this report with 21 others including nine children injured and some of them receiving treatment at the Children’s Mercy Hospital.

During a press conference on Wednesday, the Chief of Kansas City Police Department, Stacey Graves, said three people of which two of them were armed had been detained in relation to the shooting.

Meanwhile, the motive behind the attack is unclear at the moment but investigators are currently working to establish the reason, Mr Graves told reporters.

Players of Kansas City have started sending condolences to the victims of the shooting. The franchise’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted “Praying for Kansas City” while tight end Travis Kelce wrote “I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today.”

“My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me,” he added.
