A shooting incident in the southern Philippines has left a student dead and two other people injured, after a grade nine student opened fire at a high school on Tuesday while filming the attack with a body camera.

The incident occurred at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s Junior High School in Zamboanga City.

According to Reuters, which verified the online livestream, the suspect entered two classrooms and opened fire, switching weapons and firing multiple rounds in the second classroom.

Police confirmed the student brought a “pistol and a rifle” onto the school campus and opened fire toward students inside their classrooms. The student killed a male tenth-grader before taking his own life while livestreaming the attack with a body camera.

The attack left nine other individuals injured in critical condition, as hundreds of students and staff were evacuated from the school’s premises.

The school has also temporarily shut down its activities following the incident.

Authorities disclosed that the suspect was the son of a customs official, and the second weapon used in the incident was registered to the officer as his licensed personal firearm.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr condemned the attacks in a statement, expressing his grief to the families and the school’s community after the tragic incident. The president ordered a thorough investigation into the school shooting.

“We grieve with the families and the entire [school] community over a tragedy that should never have happened.

“I have directed our law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and to determine what more must be done to prevent another family, another school and another community from suffering the same grief,” Mr Marcos said.

The attack marks the country’s second school shooting in less than two months, after three students were killed and seven others were injured at San Jose National High School in Tacloban in June.
