At least one person was feared killed and dozens of cars razed in a petrol tanker explosion in Abeokuta on Tuesday morning, witnesses told Peoples Gazette.

The explosion struck at about 8:00 a.m. when a petrol tanker lost control and crashed into a commercial avenue, spilling its content.

An okada rider was killed during the accident, witnesses said, adding that the articulated tanker driver was cruising above speed limit before the disaster.

Dozens of vehicles were reportedly razed in the ensued inferno. Nearby offices, including a GTBank branch and facilities used by Lawson Group of Schools, Kuto, Abeokuta, were also reportedly affected.

The accident triggered a widespread panic amongst commuters and residents nearby.

Fire service officials razed to the scene of the incident, putting out the blaze with the support of bewildered locals.

It was not immediately clear where the tanker was billed to deliver its content, and a police spokesman did not return a request seeking comments about whether  or not its owners have been identified by authorities.
