Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said one of the 50 Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa died shortly after arriving the Accra International Airport.

The ministry stated that the Ghanaian died on Friday at the Emergency Medical Reception at the Accra International Airport, after several attempts by doctors to stabilise the individual.

The ministry noted that other passengers aboard the Air Tanzania flight from South Africa said the individual’s health deteriorated about 30 minutes before the plane landed in Ghana.

It added that it arranged for an autopsy on the remains at Police Hospital, promising to provide an update after formal engagement with the deceased’s family.

Recall that South Africans launched xenophobic attacks on other African nationals from Ghana, Nigeria, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Lesotho among others.

The South African xenophobes under the March & March group led by an activist and former radio presenter, Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, embarked on violent protests, resulting in attacks on businesses in the country.

Also, the civil and anti-immigrant group gave the Africans a June 30, 2026, deadline to depart the country. The unrest prompted governments of the affected countries to evacuate their nationals from the rainbow country.
