Osun NAWIS chairperson Tijani, Ibekwe win board seats

Chairperson, Nigeria Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS) in Osun State, Omobola Tijani, and Joy Ibekwe, have emerged victorious to represent NAWIS on two national sports federation boards.
The election was conducted on Friday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Ms Tijani defeated Udak Okoja by securing 29 votes against 11 to become NAWIS representative on the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation board.
Ms Ibekwe won 26 votes against Chinedu Onikeku’s 13, emerging as NAWIS representative on the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation board.
Ms Tijani, also a sports director at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, said she plans to boost female weightlifting development nationwide.
She noted that lack of mentorship remains a major challenge, limiting both the mental and physical preparation of female weightlifters.
She stated, “I was once an athlete, then a coach, and now a sports administrator. I understand the struggles of the players. I’m ready to partner with the federation to promote weightlifting, especially among girls. Sports is now a career path for many. We must guide athletes for life beyond competition. Education and planning are key to their long-term success.’’
Ms Tijani stressed the need for mentorship and support, so that athletes could reach their full potential during and after their careers.
Ms Ibekwe, also a sports administrator, pledged to work for greater inclusion and opportunities for girls in Nigerian sports.
She emphasised the importance of creating an environment where female athletes could thrive and excel in their chosen disciplines.
“I will ensure girls get equal chances to grow. We must give them space to reach the peak of their sports careers,” she said.
Twenty-nine candidates were elected unopposed to represent NAWIS across different sports federations nationwide.
The elective congress for NAWIS representatives into various sports federations was also held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
The organisation advocates equal opportunities, improved facilities, and better recognition for female athletes.
NAWIS also focuses on identifying and nurturing female sports talents across various disciplines.
