Outgoing Director of Military Hospital, Benin City, Edo State, Brig.-Gen. Paulina Aburime, has identified major infrastructural and operational improvements recorded at the facility.

Ms Aburime gave the highlights as the hospital hosted its 2025 West African Social Activities (WASSA).

The director said that the hospital had witnessed significant improvements in power supply, water availability and sanitation during her nearly three-year tenure.

She explained that one of the most notable achievements under her leadership was the installation of a solar power system, which significantly improved electricity supply at the hospital.

According to her, the celebration provided her an opportunity to reflect on this progress.

Ms Aburime said, “This particular WASSA is very special to me because it is likely my last here on this tour of duty. It gives me the opportunity to look back and appreciate what we have been able to achieve together at the Military Hospital, Benin.

“The solar farm is a big testament. Today, we can confidently say that we have power at the Military Hospital. Our water supply is functional, and our sanitary systems, including toilets, are now working. These are basic but critical improvements.”

The senior military officer acknowledged that while the hospital still operated within an ageing structure, several previously non-functional facilities had been restored, improving service delivery for patients and working conditions for staff.

The director, who said she would soon be reporting to a new unit, expressed appreciation to officers, soldiers, civilian staff and military families for their support, describing their cooperation as vital to the successes recorded.

She also applauded the organising committee for the WASSA celebration, stressing that the annual military tradition promotes unity, comradeship and shared values among personnel and their families.

Declaring the 2025 WASSA officially open, Ms Aburime said Benin City would always remain home to her, expressing confidence that her successor would build on the gains made.

In his remarks, the Special Guest of Honour, Maj.-Gen. Charles Omoregie (retd), traced the history of WASSA to the colonial era and commended the Nigerian Army for sustaining the tradition.

Mr Omoregie also praised the leadership of the Military Hospital, Benin City, describing the event as a fitting celebration of unity and service.

The celebration featured cultural displays, tugs of war and the presentation of awards to outstanding officers, soldiers and civilian staff of the hospital.

The event marked a colourful end-of-year gathering for the military medical community in Benin City.
