A new report by the World Bank has placed Africa as the continent with the least access to electricity.

In its 2022 edition of Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress report, the global bank disclosed that about 733 million people globally were living without electricity, with Africa accounting for 568 million of the population

“Africa remains the least electrified in the world with 568 million people without electricity access,” the report partly read.

Several waves since the emergence of COVID-19 in early 2020, according to the bank, have been a crucial factor in impeding progress toward universal energy access.

It said that the effects of the COVID-19 dilemma on energy have been exacerbated in recent months by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has created uncertainty in global oil and gas markets and pushed up energy prices.

The report detailed that at the current rate of progress, 670 million people globally will remain without electricity by 2030.

The report comes at a time when Nigeria, a country in Sub-Saharan Africa continues to suffer incessant power outages occasioned by the continued collapse of the country’s national grid.

Peoples Gazette on Sunday reported that the country’s electricity grid collapsed for the 17th time this year.
