Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has called for a united force to defeat the scourge of terrorism and other criminal elements threatening the peace and unity of Nigeria.

Recounting the “massacre” at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, where over 40 worshippers were killed, Mr Aiyedatiwa said dozens of survivors of the violent attack still bear the scars of the sad incident.

“As we continue to seek justice for them, let us stand together against terror’s might and other forms of criminalities,” he said.

The governor spoke on Saturday at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Akure, during the 15th Episcopal Anniversary and 35th Priestly Ordination Anniversary of the Bishop of Ondo Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Jude Ayodeji Arogundade.

Mr Aiyedatiwa explained that the country has what it takes to combat and win the war against “terrorists” sabotaging the military’s efforts to ensure stability in the country.

He disclosed that the June 5, 2022, tragic attack, in which unrepentant terrorists armed with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) killed worshippers, was a major hit on the families of the casualties and the state as a whole.

Although security agencies announced the arrest and ongoing prosecution of some suspects linked to the attack, the governor said the memories of the victims would linger forever.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to securing justice for the victims of the terrorist attack, stressing that security remains a top priority for the state.

“In unity and love, we will find the strength to heal the wounds, mend broken hearts, and ensure a safer Sunshine State,” the governor added.

Highlighting his administration’s efforts to strengthen security, Mr. Aiyedatiwa disclosed that 75 high-grade Hilux vehicles equipped with modern security gadgets were recently procured to support security agencies.

He added that the state provides monthly logistics to security operatives, stressing that the move has positioned the state as one of the safest in the country.

“The combined effect of this collaboration is the wide acknowledgement of Ondo State as one of the most secured and safest in Nigeria.

“While our people carry on their daily businesses with a sense of safety, it has also translated to massive investors coming to do business in Ondo State,” he said.

Mr. Aiyedatiwa lauded Mr Arogundade, describing him as a beacon of hope and an embodiment of peace, justice, and human dignity.

He said Mr Arogundade’s pastoral leadership has positively impacted countless lives in the state and beyond, saluting the Catholic Church he leads for its pivotal role in advancing education, healthcare, and social development.

Speaking, Mr Arogundade applauded the government for returning missionary schools to the church, pledging that the institutions would continue to provide quality education anchored on strong moral values to groom future leaders.

Reflecting on 35 years of priesthood and 15 years as Bishop of the Ondo Diocese, he urged newly ordained priests to remain steadfast in their devotion to God and service to humanity.
