Oyo Abduction: SUBEB hails NUT strike suspension

The executive chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), Nureni Adeniran, has described the suspension of the Nigeria Union of Teachers’ (NUT) industrial action in the state as a demonstration of patriotism, maturity and commitment to the future of Nigerian children.
In a statement on Thursday by the SUBEB media team, Mr Adeniran said the union’s decision to prioritise the academic calendar and learners’ interests was a proof of the teachers’ sense of responsibility towards the nation’s future.
Mr Adeniran stated, “I warmly commend the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for its patriotic decision to suspend the withdrawal of teachers’ services. This demonstrates a deep sense of responsibility, maturity, and unwavering commitment to the future of our children.”
He stated that the decision to call off the industrial action would prevent further disruption to teaching and learning in the state and ensure that pupils continued to enjoy uninterrupted access to quality education.
Mr Adeniran noted that the development was commendable, even as stakeholders remained hopeful for the safe return of the pupils and teachers abducted on May 15 in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
“This commendable decision is even more significant as it comes at a time when stakeholders, family members and friends in the education sector are still anxiously awaiting the release of the abducted pupils and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area,” the SUBEB boss said.
The SUBEB chairman thanked Governor Seyi Makinde, the federal government and security agencies for the coordinated efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims.
He added that their resilience and commitment continued to give hope to the affected families, reassuring stakeholders that the safety and well-being of teachers and pupils remained a priority.
He also thanked the state’s NUT leadership and teachers for their understanding, sacrifice and steadfastness despite the prevailing challenges.
He urged all stakeholders to continue to embrace dialogue, mutual respect and constructive engagement in resolving issues affecting the sector.
“I pray that this development marks the beginning of lasting industrial harmony, renewed collaboration among all parties, and a stronger commitment to safeguarding our schools while advancing the cause of quality basic education for every Nigerian child,” Mr Adeniran said.
On Wednesday, the NUT called off its indefinite strike, which it declared in the state public schools on June 1.
A statement jointly signed by the union’s state chairman and secretary, Hassan Fatai and Olukayode Salami, respectively, said the decision followed renewed engagements with the state government and assurances of improved security measures in the state.
