The industrial action of aviation workers has left hundreds of passengers stranded at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where the strike has now entered its second day and disrupted airport transport operations.

Among a litany of issues were the collective bargaining agreement, demands for better salaries, understaffing, and more. Negotiations between Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) and Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) hit a stalemate on Sunday with representatives walking out on each other.

The KAA said it was “working closely with the relevant aviation agencies, airlines and other stakeholders to manage the situation, minimise disruption and facilitate the smooth flow of airport operations.”

Moss Ndiema, KAWU secretary-general, said the contending parties scheduled a meeting for Tuesday to continue negotiations, adding that the strike would continue until then.

“We have agreed to proceed with the engagements tomorrow, as from 11 o’clock in the morning. In the meantime, the strike action is still on,” Mr Ndiema said.
