The two major political parties in Nigeria have spoken against the touted postponement of the general elections billed for February 25 and March 11.

On Wednesday, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cautioned against postponement of the 2023 general election and setting up of an Interim National Government.

In a statement, Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman for the Atiku/Okowa Campaign Organisation, said the interim government does not have a place in the 1999 Constitution.

Mr Ologbondiyan said that the alleged narratives or demands for the postponement of the 2023 general election should be perished.

He said the February 25 presidential election date must be sacrosanct given that Nigerians were ready to go to the polls to elect the candidate of their choice as the next president of the country.

Mr Ologbondiyan said that the party’s position was predicated on reports alleging sinister plots and demands for the postponement of the 2023 general election.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immune itself from such demands and focus on its mandate to deliver a free, fair and credible election.

In a similar vein, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had also said that it had no business seeking postponement of the 2023 general election, as it was fully prepared for the poll.

“We stand ready for the general election, and remain confident that Nigerians will overwhelmingly renew our mandate in a peaceful, free and credible electoral contest,” APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said in a statement rebutting plot to push for postponement of the polls.
