Persons with disabilities seek inclusion in Anambra LG poll, electoral processes

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities has called for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the September 28 Local Government elections in Anambra State.
The association’s Chairman, Ugochukwu Okeke, stated this while speaking with journalists in Awka, noting that it was critical to remove barriers hindering their active participation in electoral processes.
Mr Okeke said the voices, experiences, and perspectives of PWDs were invaluable in shaping communities and governance as they constituted a significant portion of the state’s population.
He said, “In every democratic setting, the essence of holding elections is to give a voice to every citizen, ensuring that diverse perspectives are represented. PWDs have continued to face some barriers that hinder their active participation in electoral processes despite significant progress recorded in promoting inclusivity in Anambra State. The practice of excluding PWDs includes placing ballot boxes where it will be difficult to access or harassing any person helping PWDs with any means of transportation on an election day. Political parties also fix their meetings without considering the accessibility and reasonable accommodations for PWDs.’’
Mr Okeke emphasised that the belief that PWDs could not hold leadership or elective positions was contrary to the principles of equity and fairness, calling for a mindset shift.
He also urged authorities, political parties, and the electoral body in the state to comply with the Anambra State Disability Rights Law.
According to him, the participation of PWDs in elections is not only a fundamental right but essential in fostering a more inclusive and representative democracy.
He stated, “Proactive measures such as making polling units and election materials accessible, conducting awareness campaigns and consulting organisations representing PWDs. The implementation of these measures will support the full integration of PWDs into the democratic system and decision-making processes.’’
