The wife of the Plateau State governor, Helen Mutfwang, on Wednesday in Jos gave N200,000 each to 250 persons living with disabilities.

Mrs Mutfwang said that the intervention was under the Renewed Hope Initiative of the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, to support beneficiaries in recapitalising their ventures for sustainable livelihoods.

The governor’s wife said the programme was designed to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities across states and the FCT.

She explained that each state and Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) would also receive N50 million for further distribution to persons with disabilities in their domains.

Mrs Mutfwang stated that 9,500 beneficiaries nationwide would receive a total of N1.9 billion through the initiative.

The governor’s wife explained that the scheme reflected the national commitment to inclusive growth and improved economic participation for vulnerable groups.

She added that the initiative had earlier supported over 100,000 traders, including persons with disabilities, through various social programmes.

Mrs Mutfwang urged beneficiaries to use the grants wisely, saying the funds were intended to strengthen families and improve long-term economic stability.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Caroline Dafur, said the grant would promote inclusion and empower persons with disabilities to start or expand businesses and improve their livelihoods.

The Chairman of the Disability Commission, Dr Lengnen Jurmang, said the grant was a vital boost for economic independence, praising government commitment to inclusion and urging beneficiaries to use the support to strengthen their livelihoods.

Some of the beneficiaries, who were overwhelmed with joy, said the celebration of the World Disability Day in the state by the governor’s wife had given them a sense of belonging.

A beneficiary, Janet Maidawa, said the grant would help revive her small business and give renewed confidence to provide for her family.

Another beneficiary,Garba Ukasha, said the grant was an opportunity to expand his trade and move toward financial independence despite daily challenges.

Also, Hannatu Bature, said the gesture was timely, explaining that the grant would allow them to purchase needed equipment and strengthen their ability to earn a sustainable income.
