Police arraign 29-year-old man over alleged theft, assault

The police on Wednesday arraigned a 29-year old man, Alade Segun, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged stealing and assault.

The defendant, whose address was not given, is facing a three-count charge of stealing, assault and breach of peace.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that Segun and others now at large, committed the offence at about 12.00p.m on July 17, at Ogbon Ado Street, Ado-Ekiti.

He said that the defendant stole a power bank valued at N30,000 and cash sum of N30,000 belonging to the complainant, Omotosho Irawo.

Mr Adeniyi also stated that the defendant assaulted a cop who was performing his lawful duty, and that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 302, 187(a) (b) and (c) and 181(d) Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the defendant, Adunni Olanipekun, urged the court to grant the defendant bail, and promised that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Dolamu Babalogbon, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case until July 29 for hearing.
