Police arraign siblings over theft of gold jewellery

Two siblings, Babawale Ajuwon and Samiat Ajuwon, were on Friday arraigned before the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, over the alleged stealing of gold jewellery worth over N20 million.
Mr Babawale, 37, and Ms Samiat, 32, who reside in Ibadan, are being charged with conspiracy, stealing, and breach of public peace, to which they pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Akeem Akinloye, told the court that the defendants committed the offences at about 9:00a.m. on January 1, at 34 Stargate, Oluyole Estate, Ibadan.
Mr Akinloye further said the siblings stole a 24-carat hand chain valued at N11.8 million and an 18-carat necklace worth N8.6 million belonging to the complainant, Emeka Eze.
The prosecutor stated that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of public peace.
“They entered the complainant’s apartment and made video recordings without his knowledge,” he said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 249(6), 390(9), and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The chief magistrate, Olabisi Ogunkanmi, admitted the first defendant to bail of N5 million and two sureties in like sum.
She granted the second defendant bail on self-recognition and adjourned the matter until April 21 for a hearing.
