Police arrest suspected armed robber, recover AK-49 rifle in Lagos

Operatives of the police command in Lagos State have detained a suspected armed robber for alleged unlawful possession of firearms.
The command’s spokesman, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.
He stated that the suspect was apprehended by detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) following a coordinated and intelligence-led raid.
“On July 15, the detectives, acting on intelligence, stormed a criminal hideout in the Ajegunle area of Ikorodu.
“During the operation, the team apprehended the suspect in possession of one AK-49 assault rifle, three magazines, 15 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, three rounds of 9mm (K2) ammunition, and two rounds of 7.62x51mm ammunition,” he said.
The police spokesperson said the investigation revealed that the suspect was deeply engaged in armed robbery and illegal land acquisition operations.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had been actively involved in armed robbery and land-grabbing activities across various parts of the state, using the recovered firearm to perpetrate his crimes.
“Further investigations revealed that the suspect has accomplices,” the police spokesperson said.
According to him, efforts are being intensified to apprehend other members of the criminal syndicate and to charge all involved to court at the conclusion of the investigations.
He said the state commissioner of police, Olohundare Jimoh, commended the officers for their quick action.
“CP Jimoh commended the SCID for their professionalism and swift action.
“The CP also reiterates the command’s unwavering commitment to proactive, intelligence-led policing and warns criminal elements that Lagos will remain a hostile environment for unlawful activities,” Mr Hundeyin said.
