Police arrest two suspected cable vandals in Abuja

The police command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has arrested two suspected vandals and recovered several cut-to-size armoured cables in Guzape, Abuja.
The suspects, identified as Sagir Abubakar of Kuchigoro Village and Seidu Umar Bello, were arrested following a police patrol along Walter Ofonagoro Street, Guzape, in the early hours of Saturday.
The command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, disclosed this on Monday in a statement.
“The operatives approached the vehicles to ascertain the occupants’ reasons for being at the location at that hour.
“However, upon sighting the police team, the occupants sped off in the vehicles, abandoning one of their accomplices, who attempted to escape on foot,” Ms Adeh said.
She stated that the operatives immediately gave chase, intercepted and arrested him.
According to her, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, identified as Sagir Abubakar of Kuchigoro Village, FCT, was a member of a gang that targeted secluded locations within the FCT to vandalise public and private infrastructure.
“A search of the surrounding premises where he and his accomplices were sighted led to the recovery of several cut-to-size armoured cables,” she noted.
She said further investigations led to the arrest of another suspected accomplice, identified as Seidu Umar Bello, who had initially fled the scene in one of the vehicles.
Ms Adeh added that investigations were ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspects’ activities, identify other members of the gang and apprehend those still at large.
She said the arrested suspects remained in custody and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
