Police assure parties, candidates of security ahead of Kogi LG polls

The police command in Kogi has assured political parties and candidates of adequate security ahead of the October 17 local government elections in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, gave the assurance on Friday when he received members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the command headquarters in Lokoja.
He said the command was fully prepared and had mapped out strategies to ensure peaceful elections.
“We are fully prepared for the council election. My officers and men are already on the ground.
“We have mapped out our strategies and we are good to go,” he said.
Mr Kankarofi said he had discussed preparations for the elections with the Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC), Mamman Nda-Eri.
Mr Nda-Eri, at a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to shun violence and seek redress for grievances through lawful channels.
He said declared election results could only be challenged through the appropriate electoral tribunal, adding that the commission would publish the results on its website.
The KOSIEC chairman also called for inclusive participation in the elections and urged the media to guard against misinformation ahead of the polls.
