The police commands in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Lagos on Monday embarked on an environmental sanitation exercise as part of activities lined up for the 2026 National Police Day.

The FCT commissioner of police, Ahmed Sanusi, said the command had also organised a free medical outreach.

He said the sanitation exercise and the free medical outreach were part of the command’s efforts to enhance community engagement in the territory.

Mr Sanusi said the week-long activities would culminate in the actual National Police Day, slated for April 7.

He said the activities were in line with the IGP’s directive for police commands nationwide to embark on environmental sanitation and medical outreaches to mark the 2026 National Police Day.

Mr Sanusi said the idea was to impact the communities and make them understand that the police are part of the community.

“The idea is for them to know that we are part of them, that we can also do what they are doing and for them to know that we are ready to serve them.

“It is also for the communities to know that we can be more friendly and attractive to each other.

“So, that is why we are out to clean up the area and enlighten the public on the benefits of cleanliness,” the CP said.

Similarly, the Lagos Police Command said the initiative, which focuses on environmental cleanliness, aims to promote a safer, healthier society.

“Officers and personnel participated in clean-up exercises in various parts of the state, demonstrating the command’s role in fostering community development and public well-being,” the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said in a post on X.

Ms Adebisi said the command had also announced a medical outreach programme scheduled for 10.00 a.m. at Computer Village, Ikeja.

“The medical outreach will feature a wide range of services, including health talks, medical counselling, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, as well as testing for Hepatitis B and C.

“Attendees will also benefit from eye examinations, retroviral screening, and the administration of free medications,” she said.

The spokesperson said the programme was designed to build stronger relationships between the police and the public while addressing critical health needs at the grassroots level.

“Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the free services, as the command continues to position itself as a key partner in both security and social development across the state,” she said.
