Police declared me wanted after officers failed to execute IGP’s shoot-on-sight order: Sowore

Activist Omoyele Sowore has alleged that Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun ordered operatives of the Lagos State Police Command to shoot him on sight in Oworonshoki.
The former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress disclosed this on X on Monday, after Lagos Commissioner of Police Jimoh Olohundare declared him wanted and ordered him to turn himself in or face arrest.
Mr Sowore wrote, “The Lagos Police Commissioner, Moshood Jimoh, has reportedly declared me ‘wanted’ for ‘disturbance of public peace,’ allegedly as a result of his officers’ inability to execute a ‘shoot on sight’ order given by his illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, in Oworonsoki today.
“Despite my repeated attempts to contact Nigeria Police Force @PoliceNG Commissioner Jimoh, he has not taken my calls; nevertheless, I plan to meet with him soon to address his declaration.”
Force spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin did not respond to Peoples Gazette’s calls and messages seeking comments on the shoot-on-sight allegation.
Mr Olohundare had disclosed earlier in the day that 13 of Mr Sowore’s associates had already been arrested and declared him wanted over his planned protests at the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki Tollgate, and Freedom Park against the demolition of buildings in Oworonshoki by the Babajide Sanwo-Olu government.
“Sowore should surrender at the nearest police station or face arrest wherever he is found,” said Mr Jimoh. “Anyone attempting to cause disturbance or block our roads will face the full weight of the law.”
The commissioner described the alleged plan as criminal and warned it could trigger severe traffic congestion and endanger lives.
“It is only someone who needs examination that would attempt to block such a vital route used by thousands daily,” he said.
