Police detain two suspected armed robbers in Akwa Ibom
The police command in Akwa Ibom State says it detained two persons over suspected involvement in armed robbery at Ikot Otu, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, told journalists in Uyo Wednesday that the breakthrough followed credible intelligence from the public.
Ms John said that operatives of the command raided a criminal hideout at Ikot Otu in Ikot Ekpene on February 8, and apprehended a 48-year old man.
She said that another member of the gang aged 32 was apprehended in the course of further investigation on the matter.
The police spokesman said that a single barrel gun, gunpowder containers, expended cartridges, two special protection units and police badges were recovered during the operation.
“This is a strong indication of criminal impersonation and an attempt to disguise as law enforcement personnel to perpetrate violent crimes,” she said.
Ms John said that the command viewed the illegal possession of police badges and locally reloaded ammunition as a serious threat to public safety.
She said that the suspects were currently in police custody, adding that investigations were ongoing to dismantle the entire criminal network.
Ms John urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements around their neighbourhood to the police.
