Police, firm accuse Lagos businessman of land-grabbing in disputed N1 billion Lekki property

Lagos Zone 2 police command and a real estate development company Skyview Properties have faulted a petition submitted to the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, the Police Service Commission and the National Assembly over a disputed property located at Plot 77, Lekki Phase 1 in the state.
A businessman, Akeem Osuolale Ogunseye, through his lawyer Marshal Abubakar, petitioned the trio over the property and accused the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the command, Moshood Jimoh, of land grabbing, abuse of office, abuse of power and malicious destruction of the property.
Mr Ogunseye, who claimed to be the beneficial owner of the property, said he and his family members had been in peaceful possession of the property since its purchase, noting that he built a family home and foundation for 10 additional houses valued at over ₦1,000,000,000.
He further accused Mr Jimoh of mobilising heavily armed tactical police detachments alongside heavy-duty demolition machinery to the site.
However, the command, in a statement issued by its spokesperson Afolayan Gbenga on Tuesday, described the allegations as mischievous and misleading.
“The Assistant Inspector General of Police also did not at any time leave his office to where the property is located with policemen to supervise any demolition of any property. This is also misleading and mischievous accusation against the AIG that is not substantiated with any fact or evidence.
“Consequently, Akeem Osuolale Ogunseye is without any doubt, a meddlesome interloper and a desperate land grabber who would stop at nothing despite a subsisting court judgment to perpetrate forceful takeover at will and with the use of violence, of the property at Plot 37, Block 77, Lekki Peninsular Scheme 1, Lekki, Lagos, whose lawful owner has been in lawful possession since 1993,” the statement said.
The command further dismissed claim that the petition submitted to the AIG was torn, adding that it was available for inspection.
“His petition was not torn as alleged in the media publication and it is available in our records for inspection. Akeem Osuolale Ogunseye is at liberty and may wish to report back to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zonal Criminal Investigation Department where his matter is being handled. It is obvious that the turning down of the petition to sway the course of justice by Akeem Osuolale Ogunseye is clearly the reason why he is using the media to malign the integrity of the AIG,” it added.
Similarly, Skyview, in a statement on Wednesday, identified itself as the rightful owner of the property, noting that it legally purchased it in 2008.
The real estate company, which noted that there was nothing in the landed matter that concerned Mr Jimoh, added that the AIG only intervened to restore peace and ensure that both parties awaited the decision of the trial court, which was then hearing the case.
“The recent campaign of blackmail against AIG Jimoh and Skyview is a mere attempt to whip up public sentiment by a person who has no right in law and in fact to the property in question but has resorted to self-help and the use of violence to scare our workers from the property. We will not succumb to the blackmail.
“While we possess all the relevant documents conferring ownership of the said property on us, we want to state clearly that when the said Alhaji Ogunseye and his boys went to the property and wreaked violence on our workers, we reported the case to the then Commissioner of Police, Lagos Command, Mr Jimoh who only ordered that both parties should await the judgement in Court and that the police could not do anything on a sub judice matter. He also made all the parties agree to await the judgement of the Court since they have joined issues in the Court,” the company stated.
The company noted that it only returned to the site to commence development after the judgement of Justice K. A. Jose, delivered on June 30, 2025 in which she issued an order of perpetual injunction restraining Mr Ogunseye, his agents and privies from further trespassing on the said property.
“It should be noted that the said Mr Ogunseye is an agent of Mr Ajibode and the claim that they have a subsisting case at the Court of Appeal goes to no issue as they have no Stay of Execution order from the appellate Court which could prevent Skyview Properties from moving on with the execution of its approved plan by the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Development.
“Mr Ajibode who is the architect has eloped to the United States after using the said Alhaji Ogunseye to initiate the unwarranted claims. Ajibode had sold the land to an individual in 1992 and submitted his C of O as well as executed a Deed of Conveyance to the said buyer. Skyview Properties in turn bought from the buyer and paid adequate consideration for the property. We also paid money to Ajibode to execute another Deed of Conveyance to our Company.
“It was long after the conclusion of the transaction that Ajibode again returned with a demand which the Company considered as an extortion plan. He was demanding N50 million. It was when Skyview told him we would not succumb to this game of blackmail that the said Alhaji Ogunseye came into the picture as the masquerader behind the public dance and mobilised some people to forcefully enter the property but were resisted,” it added.
The company said its move to file a
court case and petition the police commissioner was a demonstration of its commitment to due process and judicial process instead of taking the law into its hand.
It restated the fact that the subsisting court judgement was in its favour, adding that there was no judicial order restraining the company or contrary to the court judgment.
