The police command in Anambra has begun an investigation to track down suspected cultists behind the fatal attack on four persons allegedly belonging to a rival group in the state.

The state police public relations officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, made this known in a statement on Monday in Awka.

Mr Ikenga said the cult clash, which occurred in Afor Nawfia Market, along the Onitsha-Awka Old Road on Sunday, resulted in the death of four persons.

“The Anambra Police Command wishes to provide a comprehensive update on the cult-related attack that occurred on the evening of December 7 at Afor Nawfia Market, along the Onitsha-Awka Old Road.

“Despite proactive efforts by the command operatives, some members of the same gang, on the evening of December 7, operating in a black Lexus Jeep with a registration number yet unknown, stormed Afor Nawfia Market and opened fire indiscriminately.

“The violent attack resulted in the fatal injury of four persons, after which the assailants fled the scene,” he said.

He said that although the hoodlums escaped before police arrival, preliminary information obtained at the scene has provided useful leads to track down the suspects.

“The command is already acting on the information to ensure the perpetrators are tracked down and arrested,” he said.

The police spokesperson said the command remains resolute in its determination to rid the state of cultism, violent crime, and all forms of criminality.

Operatives of the command had, on December 4, arrested two suspected cultists with a gun.

They were suspected of planning a rival cult confrontation in Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.
