Police in Taraba begin enforcement of third-party motor insurance

Taraba State Command of the Nigerian police said it is ready to commence enforcement of the mandatory third-party motor insurance policy in the state.
The command spokesperson, Abdullahi
Usman, in an interview with journalists in Jalingo on Sunday, said the move followed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Mr Usman equally reaffirmed the command’s commitment to upholding
traffic regulations for public safety across the state.
He, however, warned that non-compliance with the policy would attract strict penalties.
He advised motorists to ensure that their
vehicles met the insurance requirements to avoid any embarrassing situations.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ukachi Opara, had emphasised that vehicle owners must comply with the legal
requirement of valid third-party insurance.
Mr Usman said, “The command also warned motorists to secure other necessary vehicle documents to avoid
sanctions.”
A commercial motor driver in Jalingo, Japeth Musa, noted that the law was not new as it had been in existence for a long time.
Mr Musa wondered why it was not being enforced before now; adding that it was the right move as it would curb vehicle theft, as well as other criminal activities.
