Police nab three over masquerader disturbance in Akwa Ibom

Police command in Akwa Ibom has arrested three suspects in connection with masquerader-related disturbance along Mbak Akpan Ekpenyong.
In a statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, Timfon John, said the suspects were arrested following a distress call on August 31, 2026, at about 1752 hours.
“Acting swiftly on the distress call, operatives of the Command immediately mobilised to the area to restore normalcy and prevent any escalation of the situation.
“Upon arrival at the scene, the operatives successfully arrested three male suspects, namely: Uwakmfon Sunday, Edidiong Jackson and Sunday Tom,” Ms John stated
She noted that other participants at the scene fled upon sighting the police, adding masquerader regalia found in the possession of the suspects were also recovered and secured as exhibits.
Police commissioner Baba Azare, commended the operatives for their prompt response and professional handling of the situation.
Mr Azare warned individuals and groups against exploiting cultural or traditional activities to cause disorder, intimidation, violence or other unlawful conduct.
The commissioner, however, assured law-abiding residents that the command respects lawful cultural and traditional practices and will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that such activities are conducted peacefully and within the ambit of the law.
