Police parade three suspected armed robbers for murder, theft in Oyo

The suspects allegedly confessed to their involvement in several other robbery incidents in the state.

The Oyo State police command has paraded three suspected armed robbers arrested on Friday, at their criminal hideout in the Sabo, Ibadan, over the attack at the residence of one Alhaji Olatokunbo, in Wofun Olodo, and killing of a 44-year-old woman, Wahab Rukayat, on August 4, 2026.

Spokesperson for the command, Ayanlade Olayinka, in a statement on Saturday, said the suspects, at gun point, stole mobile phones, wristwatches, $400 dollars, and other valuables worth ₦3.493 million, during the attack, which also witnessed other occupants sustained serious injuries.

Mr Ayanlade said, “The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of an armed robbery gang responsible for a deadly robbery attack at Wofun Olodo Area of Ibadan, during which a 44-year-old woman, Mrs. Wahab Rukayat, was killed and other victims sustained serious injuries.

“The incident occurred on 4 August 2026 at about 0230hrs, when armed robbers attacked the residence of one Alhaji Olatokunbo, at Wofun Olodo Area of Ibadan. In the course of the attack, the suspected armed robbers killed his wife, Mrs. Wahab Rukayat, 44 years, while other occupants of the residence sustained serious injuries.

“The robbers also carted away several mobile phones, wristwatches, $400 US dollars, and other valuables estimated at approximately ₦3.493 million, all at gunpoint.”

Following the report and the need to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack, Mr Ayanlade said the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, directed that the case be transferred to the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) for further investigation and subsequent apprehension of those responsible.

He said, “Consequently, on 2 October 2026 at about 2100hrs, acting on credible intelligence generated through painstaking investigation and aided by technology, operatives were led to a suspected criminal hideout in the Sabo area of Ibadan, where three suspects were arrested.

“The suspects are: 1. Akinrinola Oluwatobi, male, 28 years; 2.Okunola Mathew, male, 24 years; and 3. Ibrahim Rabiu, male, 23 years. One iPhone 7 Plus, belonging to one of the victims of the Wofun Olodo robbery attack, was recovered from the suspects.

“As part of the preliminary investigation, an identification parade was conducted, during which the surviving victims were able to identify the arrested suspects among other persons presented at the parade as members of the armed robbery gang that attacked the residence on 4 August 2026.

“The suspects also confessed to their involvement and various roles played in the said robbery operation, stating that they participated in the attack, carted away valuables worth approximately ₦3.493 million, and killed the deceased woman in the course of the operation.”

They also confessed to their involvement in several other robbery incidents around the Wofun Olodo and Akobo areas of Ibadan, providing additional leads to the investigation.
